Cabinet Concerned about Status of MV Olovaha |
From the Prime Minister's Office Wednesday 12 November 2008: Cabinet is concerned about the physical status of the MV Olovaha and its ability to fulfill its inter-island shipping schedule for the Christmas and New Year period. The ship departed Nuku’alofa for Vava’u on Monday evening this week but limped back to Nuku’alofa early Tuesday morning after developing technical problems. It departed again for Vava’u on Tuesday evening after technical repairs.
The issue was discussed at this morning’s Cabinet meeting and a directive was sent to the Board of the Shipping Corporation of Polynesia, of which the Minister of Justice is Chair, to submit a report to next week’s Cabinet meeting on the physical status of the MV Olovaha.
Cabinet wanted the Board to include in its report their fall-back inter-island shipping service programme should the MV Olovaha, for one reason or other, is unable to fulfill its schedule of services to the outer islands in the coming months.
The Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon Feleti Vaka’uta Sevele, said, “The Government is extremely concerned about the shipping service needs of the people of the outer islands and the Government will do its best to ensure that those needs are met.”
