The Public Service Commission (PSC) plays a critical role in managing Tonga’s public service workforce, ensuring that it operates effectively, efficiently, and with accountability. Established under the Public Service Act, the PSC is responsible for the recruitment, training, and oversight of civil servants across government ministries and agencies. It develops and enforces policies that promote good governance, transparency, and accountability within the public sector. By doing so, the PSC contributes to the realisation of Tonga’s Strategic Development Framework II (TSDF II), aligning public service operations with national goals for economic growth, good governance, and sustainable development.
A key focus of the PSC is career development for public servants, offering ongoing training and skills development to ensure that government employees can grow within their roles and deliver high-quality services to the public. The PSC not only supports the professional growth of civil servants but also ensures that the government workforce remains responsive to the changing needs of Tonga’s citizens.
The new online portal and job vacancy system is a significant step forward in how the Commission serves both civil servants and the people of Tonga. This digital platform will provide a streamlined process for applying for public service jobs, ensuring transparency and equal opportunity for all Tongan citizens. By enabling users to upload CVs and apply for positions online, the portal makes it easier for individuals to access job opportunities in the public service, regardless of where they are located. This system also improves efficiency in the application review process and allowing the Government to handle applications faster and more effectively.
By enhancing access to job information and simplifying the application process, the PSC is helping to build a stronger, more capable government workforce that can better serve the citizens of Tonga.
The PSC oversees the recruitment process for public servants across all government departments. This includes advertising vacancies, managing applications, and ensuring that the most suitable candidates are selected based on merit and qualifications. The PSC is responsible for providing training and upskilling opportunities to civil servants. Through a variety of workshops, courses, and professional development programs, we ensure that public sector employees have the skills and knowledge to perform effectively.
The PSC develops and reviews employment policies to ensure they align with best practices and legal requirements. These policies aim to foster a fair, transparent, and efficient public service that meets the needs of both employees and the wider government. For more on our policies, click here.
We monitor and evaluate the performance of public servants to ensure high standards of service delivery. The performance management system helps identify areas for improvement and recognises outstanding contributions to the public sector.
The PSC provides mechanisms for resolving workplace disputes, including handling grievances and mediation processes. These services ensure that public servants have access to fair and transparent procedures for addressing conflicts or complaints. For details on how to lodge a grievance, please refer here.
Public Service Commission will soon coordinate new government vacancies. The Job Vacancy Portal, available soon via the Citizen Portal, will be the primary platform for anyone interested in public service roles across Tonga’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
For other employment opportunities outside the government sector, such as private companies or non-government organizations, please visit the Tonga Employment Network (TEN) platform.
While job postings may also appear on the specific organization’s own websites or their official Facebook page, it is highly recommended to check the Job Vacancy Portal.
For more information, please visit the Job Vacancies section of the National Portal.
The PSC is committed to the ongoing professional development of public servants. We offer a range of training programs designed to enhance the skills and competencies of civil servants at all levels. These programs cover areas such as leadership, management, policy development, and technical expertise. Training opportunities are regularly updated to meet the evolving needs of the public sector, ensuring employees can continuously improve and grow in their careers.
The PSC administers public service examinations, which are required for entry into certain civil service positions and for promotion to higher levels within the government. These exams help maintain a high standard of service by ensuring candidates meet the necessary qualifications and competencies. Information on the exam schedule, preparation materials, and application processes is provided through the PSC.
