Ministry of Fire & Emergency Services

Introduction

The Tonga Fire and Emergency Services (TFES) is tasked with safeguarding lives and property across the Kingdom of Tonga. Its core functions include fire suppression, rescue operations, and disaster response services, making it a critical agency in times of natural disasters, accidents, and fires. Established under the Tonga Fire and Emergency Services Act 2014, TFES also conducts fire safety education and prevention programs to reduce the risks of fire-related incidents and raise public awareness.

Tonga’s vulnerability to natural hazards, such as cyclones and earthquakes, necessitates a well-organised response unit like TFES. The department works closely with the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) to ensure preparedness and effective disaster risk management. It also addresses the increasing challenges posed by climate change, which intensifies the frequency and severity of natural disasters, putting additional pressure on emergency services.

TFES’s activities align with the Tonga Strategic Development Framework II (TSDF II), which prioritises resilience against climate change and ensuring public safety. In addition to fire services, the department is responsible for emergency medical responses and handling hazardous materials (HazMat), further broadening its scope to ensure comprehensive community protection.

What We Do

Fire Suppression

The Fire Suppression Department is responsible for responding to and extinguishing fires across Tonga. Teams are dispatched from multiple fire stations located throughout the Kingdom, ensuring that fire emergencies are handled promptly and effectively. This is a critical service, particularly in high-risk areas, where quick response times can save lives and reduce property damage.

Emergency Medical Response

TFES also provide first aid and medical support during emergencies. Firefighters are trained in basic emergency medical care, ensuring that injured persons receive immediate attention while waiting for more specialised care. This is particularly important in Tonga, where medical services in remote islands may not be immediately accessible.

Disaster Preparedness

As part of Tonga’s national disaster management framework, TFES leads initiatives in disaster preparedness and response. This includes training staff for natural disaster events such as cyclones, earthquakes, and tsunamis, as well as collaborating with other agencies like the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO). The department works closely with communities to develop disaster response plans that minimise risks and enhance community resilience.

Fire Prevention Education

TFES runs public awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about fire prevention and safety measures. These programs are carried out through school visits, community workshops, and media campaigns. The goal is to ensure that every citizen knows how to prevent fires and respond safely in an emergency.

Building Inspections

TFES conducts fire safety inspections to ensure that buildings, especially commercial properties, comply with Tonga’s fire safety regulations. These inspections are mandatory for obtaining business licenses, and the Community Safety Department advises on neccesary upgrades or modifications to improve fire safety. Requests for fire safety inspections can be made by contacting the Department.
