Department of Statistics

Introduction

The Tonga Statistics Department is responsible for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of essential data to support national planning and policy-making. Established under the Statistics Act, the department plays a critical role in providing accurate and timely statistics to both the government and the public, which are vital for informed decision-making.

The Department’s work aligns with the Tonga Strategic Development Framework II (TSDF II) by providing data crucial for monitoring and evaluating the nation’s progress toward economic growth, infrastructure development, and social goals. Through its management of the national census, economic surveys, and social statistics, the Department contributes directly to the development of the Tongan economy by supporting sectors such as tourism, foreign investment, and regional cooperation.

Accurate statistics are especially important for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Tonga. Given the unique challenges SIDS face, such as vulnerability to natural disasters, limited resources, and reliance on foreign aid and investment, reliable data enables the government to make evidence-based decisions. This information also ensures Tonga can effectively engage in regional cooperation, attract foreign investment, and access international aid programs. Furthermore, statistics on internet and mobile access are crucial for understanding and improving connectivity across the islands, enhancing communication, education, and economic opportunities.

What We Do

Census Management

The Department of Statistics conducts Tonga’s national census. The census is essential for gathering accurate information about Tonga’s population, demographics, and living conditions. This data is crucial for effective national planning, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, and housing. To ensure the census reaches all people across Tonga’s islands, the Department uses a combination of door-to-door surveys, online submissions, and community engagement to collect data, making sure that even the most remote areas are included.

Economic Statistics

The Department provides comprehensive data on Tonga’s economy, covering key indicators such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation rates, and employment figures. This information is vital for both the government and private sectors, helping to guide economic growth, attract foreign investment, and access international aid. Reliable economic data ensures that policies are based on current conditions, allowing for more informed decision-making to support sustainable development.

Social Statistics

The Department tracks essential data on population health, education, and living standards. These statistics help the government understand the quality of life in Tonga and identify areas where improvement is needed. By monitoring trends in healthcare access, school enrolment, and household incomes, the government can allocate resources effectively, ensuring that foreign aid is directed to the areas where it is most needed. Social statistics are also used by researchers to study and promote sustainable development in Tonga.

Survey Execution

The Department conducts regular surveys to update and refine national statistics, ensuring that the data reflects Tonga’s current situation. These surveys cover a wide range of topics, including household income, labour force participation, and population health. The Department makes sure the surveys are inclusive by using multiple methods of collection, such as interviews, online forms, and paper submissions, to reach all demographics. Citizens interested in assisting as survey takers or respondents can find more information and volunteer through the Department’s website or community offices.

Policy Support

The data collected and analysed by the Department is critical for government policy-making across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). This evidence-based approach ensures that policies are aligned with the actual needs of the population. For example, data from the national census can inform the Ministry of Education about where new schools are needed based on population growth. This data-driven decision-making supports effective governance and resource allocation.
